Colosseum Underground Tickets: How to Book and Entry Rules

October 26, 2026

The underground passages beneath the Colosseum, known as the hypogeum, are among Rome’s most memorable sights. Access is limited, though, and the rules are stricter than for a standard visit. Here’s how Colosseum Underground tickets work, how to book them and what to expect on the day, so nothing catches you out at the gate.

Which Ticket Includes the Underground?

The official ticket is called the Full Experience Underground and Arena. Alongside the Colosseum Arena and Museum, it covers the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Underground access itself is subject to availability, and groups are limited to 25 people, including the guide.

A standard Colosseum ticket does not include the underground. For a side-by-side comparison, read our guide to the Colosseum Underground vs Arena Floor.

How to Book Colosseum Underground Tickets

Official tickets

Official tickets go on sale online 30 days before the visit date, and underground slots can be snapped up quickly. Once you have chosen an entry time, it cannot be changed, so pick a slot carefully.

Guided tours

If official slots are gone, a Colosseum Underground tour with Arena Floor access is a convenient alternative, with a guide who explains what you’re seeing. Not sure you need the underground? See whether the Colosseum Underground tour is worth it.

Colosseum Entry Rules You Must Know

The Parco archeologico del Colosseo applies clear visitor rules:

  • Bring original ID. Tickets are personal, and the name on yours must match your identity document at access control.

  • Arrive early. For the underground ticket, arrive up to 30 minutes before your time slot. Late arrivals are not admitted, and missed slots are not refunded.

  • Pack light. Bags must not exceed 30 × 40 × 15 cm, and there is no cloakroom or luggage storage.

  • Leave certain items behind. Glass bottles, selfie sticks and large umbrellas are among the prohibited items.

  • Wear sturdy shoes. Closed, comfortable footwear is required for the uneven ground.

Expect a security check with scanners at the entrance, too.

What to Expect on the Day

With this ticket, you have 90 minutes inside the Colosseum. Below the arena, you’ll walk through the corridors where animals, scenery and gladiators were prepared before the shows. Afterwards, you can continue to the Arena, where the reconstructed floor gives a sense of the scale.

The same ticket also covers the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill next door.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Plan the rest of the day. The ticket is valid for two consecutive days, so the Forum and Palatine Hill can wait until tomorrow.

  • Bring water in a plastic bottle. There are no designated eating areas at the Colosseum.

  • Keep your ticket until the end of your visit, as it may be checked again.
